How Long Should I See A Chiropractor?

Hi, I’m Dr. Steven Battaglino with Battaglino Chiropractic. A real frequently asked question is, “How long do I need to continue seeing the chiropractor?”

It’s a great question. The answer is it depends. It depends on what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to get relieved from an acute injury, for example, from a car accident or from a fall. It’s typically gonna take less time for you to get that relief from the pain or other symptoms than it will to actually fix that problem. So it’ll take a little bit longer to fix the problem, but the added benefit there is that you’ll have less recurrences and flare-ups in the future if we actually fix the problem.

How long will it take? Again, it depends on the severity of the problem, how long it’s been there, how active you are and your lifestyle. And also if there’s any degeneration there, bumps, burning, arthritis and those types of things. A qualified chiropractor can help sort all this out and come up with a game plan for your health goals by completing a neurological and orthopedic exam to get some information about that and also to take some x-rays. The x-rays show us a picture literally of what the spine looks like, and we can get an idea of how long the problem has been there, how severe it is, and so forth. I encourage you to consult with a qualified chiropractor to come up with a game plan that meets your health goals.

Chiropractic Care | Pain Free vs. Healthy

I’m Dr. Steve Battaglino with Battaglino Chiropractic, and I want to talk about pain. A lot of people come into my office, as you can imagine, in some sort of pain, and they want chiropractic to get them out of pain. Chiropractic is fantastic at getting rid of pain, but essentially, chiropractic has a different aim, and I want to share that with you. The power that made the body, heals the body. This is a main chiropractic precept. Now whether you believe that it’s God or in the East they call it the ‘Pranas‘, the life force, or Nature or the Universe or whatever you think it is, there is something that is animating us. This runs through the nervous system to empower our body and to run everything.

The nervous system runs every cell, organ and system of your body, and the nervous system has its headquarters in the spine. Structurally, we want the spine to run, to be aligned properly, so that there is no pressure on discs and nerves and there’s no pain and no arthritis down the road. But the real aim of chiropractic is to remove stress and interference from the nervous system so that that life force can come down and run everything in the body, and the body can have its optimal health that it’s designed for.

That is really the way that we can make our immune system stronger and to help relieve stress from our body. We can’t remove our outward environmental stress ’cause it’s everywhere and there’s just no way to do it. What we can do is make the body and the immune system, the nervous system, more resilient and more resistant to stress, and that will make us healthier.

You might see five people at your office, maybe three of them are walking around with some sort of flu symptoms and two are not. Well, they are all having access to this flu that’s going around. Why are two people sick, and three are not? The answer is because their immune system is stronger. It’s more equipped and more able to fight that stress and fight off those foreign invaders. Chiropractic is excellent at powering up the immune system and the life force. I’m Dr. Steve encouraging you to come and get your spine checked and boost that life force.

Headaches and Chiropractic Care

Hi, I’m Dr. Steven Battaglino with Battaglino Chiropractic and I want to talk today about headaches and chiropractic. Specifically, how chiropractic can help get rid of headaches.

Many headaches are caused in the neck, specifically right at the very top of the neck. So we have vertebrae and the spine here in the neck and this is the base of the skull. We have little nerves that come out of each level in between the vertebrae. When things get out of alignment or crooked and that can happen in a lot of different ways, it can happen from sports injuries or bad posture or bad pillow. When that happens, these nerves get compressed and the nerves at the very top of the spine when they are compressed, it will shoot pain up into the head causing headache.

Now the other thing that happens is that the muscles on the side of the neck will get really tight and try to splint that area and that causes pain as well. With gentle, specific correction of this area, which restores proper alignment, we take pressure off the nerve and the headache goes away and the muscles relax as well.

If you are experiencing headaches on a daily basis or even on a weekly basis, I suggest that you get your neck checked by a qualified chiropractor. It is a much better fix if we can eliminate what is actually causing the problem than to cover it up with drug therapy or injection therapy or something like that.

Neck Pain

I’m Dr. Steven Battaglino with Battaglino Chiropractic and today I want to talk about neck pain and chiropractic. Chiropractic is really good at getting neck pain and let’s talk about how it works.

Let’s first talk about what’s causing the neck pain. This is the neck. This is the front of the neck or the throat area where you can see different bones here called the vertebrae. There’s a tiny little disk separating each of the bones which acts like little shock absorbers and we can see nerves coming out of the side of the spine at each level. When things get out of place, whether they’re out of place from side to side or whether this curvature from the side view gets distorted, it puts pressure on these nerves and it causes pain. It’s the nerves that are getting compressed plus the muscles that react by going into spasm to protect the area that all causes that pain.

A qualified chiropractor can restore proper alignment and take pressure of those nerves with a gentle specific correction called an adjustment and essentially it relieves pressure on these nerves, the muscles start to relax, and the pain goes away.

It’s a much more effective approach to find out what’s causing the actual pain and remove that cause instead of just covering it up with injection therapy or painkillers or something like that. So if you have any neck pain, call a qualified chiropractor today and get your neck checked.

Scoliosis – A Success Story

When I first consulted with this 11-year old boy’s mother, he was scheduled to have long stainless steel rods, called ‘Harrington Rods’ surgically inserted along the entire length of his spine on both sides.  In the first x-ray view (on left), a pronounced scoliosis is present.

The second view (on right) was taken after four months of care in my office.  The spine is clearly much straighter, and the boy is visibly taller.  However, what the x-ray doesn’t show is the dramatic increase in energy and immune function, which ensued as pressure on spinal nerves was relieved.

Degeneration and Arthritis

Spinal misalignments cause the spine to wear out prematurely. Over time, the body lays down calcium bone spurs in these areas, which eventually fuse together. This form of naturally occuring spinal fusion ‘welds’ the bones together in a misaligned way, which leads to increased pain and decreased function.

This patient is a 41-year old woman with severely reversed neck curve and considerable degeneration of the vertebrae.  She reported almost no neck pain. However, she works at a busy office where she is required to type a great deal, and can no longer work because her hands tire more and more quickly, becoming numb. By the time she came to my office, she had already undergone three carpal tunnel surgeries, which had no effect. Straightening the cervical spine of this patient with gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments relieved the pressure on the spinal nerves of the neck.  The patient’s symptoms went away and she returned to work. She continues to come in for periodic adjustments to maintain the corrections we’ve made.

Healthy Curves – Your Neck

From the side view, the neck is supposed to be curved, so that it can comfortably absorb the shock of living a lifetime in gravity.  When this curve straightens out, the resulting increase in stress on the bones and joints eventually causes bone spurs to develop.  Bone spurs are the body’s attempt to stabilize the spine.  In this x-ray, this process has begun (outlined in red).  The chiropractor’s goal in this case is to halt the progression of this irreversible process, and he does so by re-establishing a healthier curve.  The increased curve fans out the vertebrae, thereby taking pressure off the nerves where they exit the spine and alleviating the aberrant stress on the bones that causes the bone spurs to develop.
